Hindi is written in the Devanagari script, a completely different alphabet from the Latin letters a child may already know. Most letters hang from a horizontal line called the shirorekha, and consonants combine with vowel marks called matras that reshape the base letter rather than sitting beside it unchanged. This collection starts with consonants before introducing vowels and their matra forms.
