Copying is a different skill from free drawing
Free drawing lets a child put down whatever comes to mind — there's no wrong answer. Copying a picture is the opposite: it demands looking at a specific shape, breaking it into parts, and reproducing those parts accurately, which is a visual-spatial skill closer to reading a map than to creative expression.
Both are valuable, but they train different things, and a child can be strong in one while struggling with the other — a confident free-drawer isn't automatically good at copying, and that's completely normal.
Why a grid makes copying so much easier
Copying a whole picture at once overwhelms a young child's visual tracking — there's too much to hold in mind at once. Breaking the source image into a grid, and copying one square at a time into a matching empty grid, turns one large hard task into many small, manageable ones.
This is the same principle professional artists use to enlarge or copy drawings accurately; introducing it early gives kids a real technique, not just a coincidence that 'copying is easier when it's broken up.'
How to help without drawing it for your child
If your child gets stuck on one square, don't draw the line for them — instead, ask what shape they see in just that square, or where the line touches the edges of the grid box. This keeps the looking and deciding in your child's hands.
Slight imperfections are expected and fine. The goal isn't a perfect replica; it's the habit of comparing the source and the copy carefully enough to notice when something doesn't quite match.
Raising the difficulty gradually
Start with simple, symmetrical shapes with few internal lines — a house, a star — before moving to asymmetrical images or ones with more internal detail, like a face or an animal with texture.
You can also raise the challenge by shrinking the grid size (more, smaller squares) rather than only choosing more complex pictures — smaller squares force more precise visual tracking even on a simple image.
What this skill looks like later on
The same square-by-square comparison habit shows up later in copying diagrams accurately in science class, following a pattern in a craft or sewing project, or reading a map — all tasks that reward the ability to break a whole image into parts and check each part carefully.
Praise the process here more than the final result — 'you really looked carefully at that corner' matters more for building the skill than 'that looks just like the original.'
