One writing method doesn't fit every script
It's tempting to treat 'handwriting practice' as one universal skill, but the worksheets on this site actually split into two very different families depending on the script: character scripts (Korean Hangeul, Chinese Hanzi, Japanese Hiragana/Katakana) and alphabet scripts (Arabic, Hindi, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese). Each family is learned in a different order.
Using the wrong order isn't just inefficient — it can actively slow a child down, because it asks them to memorize a shape before they have any framework for what the shape means.
Character scripts: stroke order is the lesson, not a formality
In Hangeul, Hanzi, and Hiragana/Katakana, the sequence you draw the strokes in isn't a bureaucratic rule — it's what makes the character legible and fast to write once your child stops thinking about it consciously. Skipping straight to 'copy the shape you see' produces characters that look right but fall apart the moment writing speed increases.
For these scripts, have your child trace the same character several times in the correct stroke order before moving to a new one, rather than writing many different characters once each. Repetition within one character builds the muscle memory; variety too early just builds guessing.
Alphabet scripts: sound-letter mapping comes before shape perfection
For Arabic, Hindi, and the Latin-alphabet languages, the harder skill isn't drawing the letter shape — it's connecting that shape to a sound reliably enough to sound out new words later. A child who traces a letter beautifully but can't say its sound hasn't actually learned much yet.
Say the sound out loud together every time before tracing, not after. For Arabic in particular, also point out that a letter's shape changes depending on whether it's at the start, middle, or end of a word — worth naming explicitly rather than letting your child discover it as a confusing exception.
One readiness sign works across every script
Regardless of which family your child is learning, the same test tells you they're ready to move past pure tracing: can they produce the character or letter correctly from memory, with the paper blank, no model to copy from?
If they can only reproduce it while looking at an example, they're still in the tracing stage — which is completely fine, just don't rush past it because the traced version already looks neat.
Don't let unfamiliarity become the reason to stop
If you don't read the script yourself, you can still supervise effectively — stroke order is usually numbered directly on these worksheets, so you're checking sequence and direction, not meaning.
A child's first attempts in an unfamiliar script often look far messier than their first attempts in their native alphabet, purely because there's no existing muscle memory to lean on. That's expected, not a sign the language is 'too hard' — it evens out with the same repetition every script eventually requires.
